Don’t Be Deceived!

Joshua 9:1-27

September 30, 2018

  1. We have to be on guard against DECEIT.

Joshua 9:22 - “Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, ‘Why did you deceive us by saying, ‘We live a long way from you,’ while actually you live near us?’”

Genesis 3:4 - “‘You will not certainly die’, the serpent said to the woman.”

2 Corinthians 11:3 - “But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to God.”

Revelation 12:9 - “The great dragon was hurled down - that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray.”

Galatians 6:7 - ‘“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.”

Ephesians 5:6 - “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient.”

  2. We should always INQUIRE of the Lord when undertaking important decisions.

Joshua 9:14 - “The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord.”

Proverbs 12:15 - “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes. But a wise man is he who listens to counsel.”

Proverbs 3:5 - “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

1 Chronicles 10:13-14 “Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord; he did not keep the word of the Lord and even consulted a medium for guidance and did not inquire of the Lord.”

  3. Even when we are deceived, we must honor our WORD.

Joshua 9:18 - “But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath to them by the Lord, the God of Israel.”

2 Samuel 21:1 - “During the reign of King David, there was a famine for three consecutive years; so David sought the face of the Lord. The Lord said, ‘It is on account of Saul and his blood-stained house; it is because he put the Gibeonites to death.’” Saul broke the word of the Israelites to protect the Gibeonites which caused Saul and the Israelites to suffer God’s wrath.

Numbers 30:2 - “If a man makes a vow to the Lord, or takes an oath to bind himself with a binding obligation, he shall not violate his word, he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.”
