God Grants Us Rest
February 3rd, 2019
1. After the tribal allotments, the Levites RECEIVED their allotment of 48 towns dispersed throughout all of the promised land.
Joshua 21:2 – “The Lord commanded through Moses that you gave us towns to live in, with pasturelands for our livestock.”
The Lord wanted the Levites, the priests, to be located throughout Canaan not just in one tribal area.
Joshua 21:41 – “The towns of the Levites in the territory held by the Israelites were forty-eight in all, together with their pasturelands.”
Numbers 35:6 – “Six of the towns you give the Levites will be cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone may flee. In addition, give them forty-two other towns.”
2. The Lord provides us REST after the work is done.
Joshua 21:43 – “So the Lord gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors and they took possession of it and settled there.”
Joshua 21:44 – “The Lord gave them rest on every side just as he had sworn to their ancestors. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the Lord gave all their enemies into their hands.”
Genesis 2:2-3 – “By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.”
Exodus 20:8-10 – “Remember the sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God.”
Exodus 33:14 – “The Lord replied, ‘my presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’”
Hebrews 4:9-10 – “There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his.”
3. The Lord provides us with his REST and PEACE along the way.
Matthew 11:28 – “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:29 – “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Philippians 4:7 – “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
John 16:33 – “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
