Pressing on Toward the Goal
January 20th, 2019
1. The Israelites _______________ ______________ over Canaan and set up the tent of meeting at Shiloh.
Joshua 18:1 – “The whole assembly of the Israelites gathered at Shiloh and set up the tent of meeting there. The country was brought under their control.”
Joshua 18:2 – “But there were still seven Israelite tribes who had not yet received their inheritance.”
Exodus 25:8 – “Then have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them.” The tent of meeting was the sanctuary where the Israelites kept the Ark of the Covenant.
Exodus 33:7 – “Now Moses used to take a tent and pitch it outside the camp some distance away, calling it the “tent of meeting.” Anyone inquiring of the Lord would go to the tent of meeting…” It was where God met with the Israelites. It was the holiest place and the center of worship and sacrifice in the nation of Israel.
Shiloh was centrally located which made it more accessible for all the tribes to come and worship there.
2. While the Israelites had made significant progress, they still had to _________________
_________________ to finish the work and occupy the rest of the land for the remaining 7 tribes.
Joshua 18:3 – “So Joshua said to the Israelites, how long will you wait before you begin to take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors has given you?” Sometimes, we need a push. We need to get moving.
Psalm 119:60 – “I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands.” If we remain idle when the Lord has called us forward, it’s a mistake. We can miss out like the Israelites did in the desert. (Deuteronomy 1:19). They didn’t move out in faith to take the Promised Land when they should have and the Lord was not pleased with them.
James 4:17 – “If anyone then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”
Philippians 3:14 – “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” We should have had the attitude of the Apostle Paul to press on until the job is done.
Joshua 18:11 – Joshua 19:48 covers the allotments for the 7 remaining tribes: Benjamin, Simeon, Zebulun, Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and Dan. God directed these allotments through the casting of lots and the Israelites moved out to claim these territories.
3. Joshua received his allotment __________________ __________________ the tribes were situated.
Joshua 19:49-50 – “When they had finished dividing the land into its allotted portions, the Israelites gave Joshua son of Nun an inheritance among them, as the Lord had commanded. They gave him the town he asked for – Timnath Serah in the hill country of Ephraim.
A servant leader will also make sure that others are taken care of before they take care of their own needs.
1 Corinthians 10:24 – “No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.”
Philippians 2:4 – “Let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interest of others.”
Matthew 20:26-27 – “But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave.”
4. The Israelites finished _________________ the land under the _________________ of the Lord.
Joshua 19:51 – “These are the territories that Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel assigned by lot at Shiloh in the presence of the Lord at the entrance to the tent of meeting. And so they finished dividing the land.”
Joshua 18 begins with the reference to the divisions at the tent of meeting and Joshua 19 ends with the same reference.
The Lord was intentional in dividing the land and he used the chief priest, the leader of the nation, the tribal leaders and the casting of lots to make the allotments.
