Joshua’s Legacy

Joshua 24:29-33

March 3rd, 2019

1.    Joshua dies and is buried in the PROMISED LAND.

Joshua 24:29 – “After these things, Joshua, son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten.”

Joshua 24:30 – “And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.”

2.    There are important parallels between Joshua and JOSEPH.

Genesis 50:22 – Joseph stayed in Egypt along with all his father’s family.  He lived a hundred and ten years.

Genesis 50:24 – “Then Joseph said to his brothers, ‘I am about to die.  But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.’  And Joseph made the Israelites swear an oath and said, ‘God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this place.’”

Joshua 24:32 – “And Joseph’s bones which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried at Shechem in the tract of land that Jacob bought for a hundred pieces of silver from the sons of Hamar, the father of Shechem.  This became the inheritance of Joseph’s descendants.”

3.    Joshua and Eleazar have a very special LEGACY unto the Lord.

Joshua 24:31 – “Israel served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced everything the Lord had done for Israel.”

Joshua 24:33 – “And Eleazar son of Aaron died and was buried at Gibeah, which had been allotted to his son Phinehas in the hill country of Ephraim.”  He was the second High Priest of Israel after his father Aaron.

Joshua 24:6-7 – “When your children ask in time to come, saying, ‘What do these stories mean to you?’  Then you shall answer them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off.  And these stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.”

2 Timothy 4:7-8 – “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store  for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will reward to me on that day; and not to me only but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”
