Verse of the Week
3 “Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed.”
~ 2 Thessalonians 2:3
1. Paul provides REASSURANCE about the second coming of Christ.
2 Thessalonians 2:1-2 – “Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us – whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter – asserting that the day of the Lord has already come.”
Mark 13:26-27 – “At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.”
1 Thessalonians 4:15-16 – “According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.”
2. Paul warns the disciples not to be DECEIVED.
2 Thessalonians 2:3 – “Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.”
Matthew 24:4-5, 10-11 – “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many… At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.”
Matthew 24:24 – “For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.”
2 Thessalonians 2:9-11 – “The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.”
3. Paul forewarns the disciples that an EVIL RULER, a man of lawlessness, will emerge prior to the return of Christ.
2 Thessalonians 2:4 – “He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple proclaiming himself to be God.”
Daniel 7:25 – “He will speak against the Most High and oppress his holy people and try to change the set times and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time.”
Daniel 11:36 – “The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will say unheard-of-things against the God of gods.”
Revelation 13:5-6, 8 – “The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for 42 months. It opened it’s mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and the dwelling place and those who live in heaven… All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast – all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.”
