 Pastor Jerry Ghirardo

Today’s Verses

2 Peter 2:20-22, Proverbs 26:11-12, Proverbs 1:32, Proverbs 14:14, Jeremiah 2:19, Jeremiah 3:14-15,  and Luke 15:11-32

Verse of the Week

38 “But my righteous one will live by faith.  And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.”

~ Hebrews 10:38

1. False teachers are much worse off after they abandon the path of righteousness.

  • 2 Peter 2:20 – “If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.”

  • 2 Peter 2:21 – “It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.”

  • 2 Peter 2:22 – “Of them the proverbs are true: ‘A dog returns to its vomit,’ and, ‘A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.’”

  • Proverbs 26:11 – “As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly.”

2. The Lord warns the backslider that we get what we deserve.

  • Proverbs 14:14 – “The backslider in heart will be filled with the fruit of his ways, and a good man will be filled with the fruit of his ways.”

  • Jeremiah 2:19 – “’Backsliding will rebuke you.  Consider then and realize how evil and bitter it is for you when you forsake the LORD your God and have no awe of me,’ declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.”

  • Hebrews 10:38 – “But my righteous one will live by faith.  And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.”

3. The Lord continues to extend mercy and grace to those who repent and turn to him.

  • Jeremiah 3:14-15 – “’Return, faithless people,’ declares the LORD, ‘for I am your husband.  I will choose you — one from a town and two from a clan — and bring you to Zion.  Then I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will lead you with knowledge and understanding.’”

  • Luke 15:11-32 – The story of the Prodigal Son illustrates God’s incredible mercy for his foolish son who returns home after wallowing in the world.
