Joseph – Victory through the Trials

12 “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.”

~ James 1:12

 

1. Don’t be surprised when you face trials of many kinds.

  • I Peter 4:12 – “Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.”

  • James 1:2-4 – “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.  Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

  • Genesis 37:12-28 – Out of jealousy, Joseph’s brothers beat him and threw him in a pit.  Instead of killing him, they sold him into slavery.

  • Genesis 39:1-23 – Joseph was thrown into prison after refusing to compromise his integrity with Potiphar’s wife.

 

2. The Lord will use these trials to test us and to help us rely fully on him.

  • Genesis 39:1-6 – “Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.  The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.  When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant.  Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.  From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph.  The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.  So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.”

  • Genesis 39:22-23 – “So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.  The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph's care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.”

  • Genesis 41:14-16 – “So Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and he was quickly brought from the dungeon. When he had shaved and changed his clothes, he came before Pharaoh.  Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘I had a dream, and no one can interpret it.  But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.’  “I cannot do it,’ Joseph replied to Pharaoh, ‘but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.’”

 

3. The bigger the trials the greater the victories.

  • Psalm 105:16-22 – “He called down famine on the land and destroyed all their supplies of food, and he sent a man before them - Joseph, sold as a slave.  They bruised his feet with shackles, his neck was put in irons, till what he foretold came to pass, till the word of the Lord proved him true.  The king sent and released him, the ruler of peoples set him free.  He made him master of his household, ruler over all he possessed, to instruct his princes as he pleased and teach his elders wisdom.”

  • James 1:12 - “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.”

12 “Bienaventurado el que persevera en la prueba porque, habiendo superado la prueba, recibirá la corona de la vida que el Señor ha prometido a quienes lo aman”.

~ Santiago 1:12

 

1. No os sorprendáis cuando afrontéis pruebas de muchos tipos.

  • 1 Pedro 4:12 – “Queridos amigos, no os sorprendáis del fuego que os ha sobrevenido para poneros a prueba, como si algo extraño os estuviera sucediendo.”

  • Santiago 1:2-4 – “Hermanos míos, considérense muy gozosos cuando tengan que afrontar diversas pruebas, sabiendo que la prueba de su fe produce paciencia.  Dejad que la perseverancia acabe su obra para que seáis maduros y completos, sin que os falte nada.”

  • Génesis 37:12-28 – Por celos, los hermanos de José lo golpearon y lo arrojaron a un hoyo.  En lugar de matarlo, lo vendieron como esclavo.

  • Génesis 39:1-23 – José fue encarcelado después de negarse a comprometer su integridad con la esposa de Potifar.

 

2. El Señor usará estas pruebas para probarnos y ayudarnos a confiar plenamente en él.

  • Génesis 39:1-6 – “Ahora bien, José había sido llevado a Egipto.  Potifar, un egipcio que era oficial de Faraón, capitán de la guardia, lo compró a los ismaelitas que lo habían llevado allí.  El Señor estuvo con José para que prosperara y habitó en casa de su amo egipcio.  Cuando su amo vio que el Señor estaba con él y que el Señor le daba éxito en todo lo que hacía, José halló gracia ante sus ojos y se hizo su servidor.  Potifar lo puso a cargo de su casa y le confió todo lo que poseía.  Desde el momento en que lo puso a cargo de su casa y de todo lo que poseía, el Señor bendijo la casa del egipcio a causa de José.  La bendición del Señor estaba sobre todo lo que Potifar tenía, tanto en la casa como en el campo.  Entonces Potifar dejó todo lo que tenía al cuidado de José; estando José a cargo, no se preocupaba de nada excepto de la comida que comía.”

  • Génesis 39:22-23 – “Entonces el director puso a José a cargo de todos los detenidos en la prisión, y él fue hecho responsable de todo lo que allí se hacía.  El alcaide no prestaba atención a nada que estuviera bajo el cuidado de José, porque el Señor estaba con José y le daba éxito en todo lo que hacía.”

  • Génesis 41:14-16 – “Entonces Faraón mandó llamar a José, y rápidamente lo sacaron del calabozo. Después de afeitarse y cambiarse de ropa, se presentó ante el Faraón.  Faraón dijo a José: "Tuve un sueño y nadie puede interpretarlo".  Pero he oído decir de ti que cuando oyes un sueño puedes interpretarlo.’ “No puedo hacerlo”, respondió José al Faraón, ‘pero Dios le dará a Faraón la respuesta que desea.’”

 

3. Cuanto mayores sean las pruebas, mayores serán las victorias.

  • Salmo 105:16-22 – “Hizo caer el hambre en la tierra y destruyó todas sus provisiones de alimentos, y envió a un hombre delante de ellos: José, vendido como esclavo.  Le magullaron los pies con grillos, le pusieron grillos en el cuello, hasta que se cumplió lo que había predicho, hasta que la palabra del Señor demostró que era verdad.  El rey envió y lo puso en libertad, el gobernante de los pueblos lo puso en libertad.  Lo hizo dueño de su casa, gobernante de todo lo que poseía, para instruir a sus príncipes como quisiera y enseñar sabiduría a sus mayores.”

  • Santiago 1:12 – “Bienaventurado el que persevera en la prueba porque, habiendo superado la prueba, recibirá la corona de la vida que el Señor ha prometido a los que lo aman.”
