The Holy Spirit – Gift of Pentecost

John 14:15-19, John 14:25-27, John 16:7-11, John 16:12-15, Luke 24:49, Acts 1:8, Acts 2:38, Romans 8:9, and Ephesians 1:13

 

Verse of the Week 38 “And Peter said to them, ‘Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’” ~ Acts 2:38

 

1.  Jesus prophesies about the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

  • Luke 24:49 – “I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

  • Acts 1:8 – “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

 

2. God sends his Holy Spirit to dwell in every believer in Jesus Christ.

  • Acts 2:1-4 – “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.  Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.  They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.  All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”

  • Acts 2:38 – “And Peter said to them, ‘Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’”

  • Ephesians 1:13 – “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.”

 

3. Jesus asks the Father to give us the Holy Spirit as our Advocate, Comforter, and Teacher of Truth.

  • John 14:15-19 – “If you love me, keep my commands.  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever — the Spirit of truth.  The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him.  But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.  I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.  Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.”

  • John 14:25-26 – “All this I have spoken while still with you.  But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

  • John 16:12-15 – “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.  But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.  He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.  He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.  All that belongs to the Father is mine.  That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

 

4. The Holy Spirit brings life:

  • 2 Corinthians 3:6 – “Who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit.  For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.”

  • Romans 8:1-4 – “Those who belong to Christ Jesus are no longer under God’s judgment.  Because of what Christ Jesus has done, you are free.  You are now controlled by the law of the Holy Spirit who gives you life. The law of the Spirit frees you from the law of sin that brings death.  The written law was made weak by the power of sin.  But God did what the written law could not do. He made his Son to be like those who live under the power of sin.  God sent him to be an offering for sin.  Jesus suffered God’s judgment against our sin.  Jesus does for us everything the holy law requires.  The power of sin should no longer control the way we live.  The Holy Spirit should control the way we live.”

38 “Pedro les dijo: ‘Arrepentíos, y bautícese cada uno de vosotros en el nombre de Jesucristo para perdón de vuestros pecados; y recibiréis el don del Espíritu Santo’”.

~ Hechos 2:38

 

1. Jesús profetiza sobre la venida del Espíritu Santo en Pentecostés.

  • Lucas 24:49 – “Les enviaré lo que mi Padre ha prometido; pero quédense en la ciudad hasta que sean revestidos de poder desde lo alto.”

  • Hechos 1:8 – “Pero recibirán poder cuando el Espíritu Santo venga sobre ustedes, y serán mis testigos en Jerusalén, en toda Judea y Samaria, y hasta los confines de la tierra.”

 

2. Dios envía su Espíritu Santo para morar en cada creyente en Jesucristo.

  • Hechos 2:1-4 – “Cuando llegó el día de Pentecostés, estaban todos reunidos en un mismo lugar.  De repente, un estruendo como de un viento recio vino del cielo y llenó toda la casa donde estaban sentados.  Vieron lenguas como de fuego que se separaron y se posaron sobre cada uno de ellos.  Todos fueron llenos del Espíritu Santo y comenzaron a hablar en otras lenguas, según el Espíritu les concedía hablar.”

  • Hechos 2:38 – “Y Pedro les dijo: “Arrepiéntanse y bautícese cada uno de ustedes en el nombre de Jesucristo para perdón de sus pecados; y recibirán el don del Espíritu Santo.”

  • Efesios 1:13 – “En él también ustedes, cuando oyeron la palabra de verdad, el evangelio de su salvación, y creyeron en él, fueron sellados con el Espíritu Santo prometido.”

 

3. Jesús le pide al Padre que nos dé el Espíritu Santo como nuestro Abogado, Consolador y Maestro de la Verdad.

  • Juan 14:15-19 – “Si me amáis, guardad mis mandamientos. Y yo rogaré al Padre, y él os dará otro Abogado para que os ayude y esté con vosotros para siempre: el Espíritu de verdad.  El mundo no puede aceptarlo, porque no lo ve ni lo conoce.  Pero vosotros lo conocéis, porque vive con vosotros y estará en vosotros.  No os dejaré huérfanos; vendré a vosotros.  Dentro de poco, el mundo ya no me verá, pero vosotros me veréis.  Porque yo vivo, vosotros también viviréis.”

  • Juan 14:25-26 – “Todo esto os he hablado estando todavía con vosotros.  Pero el Abogado, el Espíritu Santo, a quien el Padre enviará en mi nombre, os enseñará todas las cosas y os recordará todo lo que os he dicho.”

  • Juan 16:12-15 – “Tengo mucho más que decirles, más de lo que ahora pueden soportar.  Pero cuando venga el Espíritu de verdad, los guiará a toda la verdad.  No hablará por su propia cuenta; solo hablará lo que oiga, y les hará saber lo que está por venir.  Él me glorificará porque de mí recibirá lo que les hará saber.  Todo lo que pertenece al Padre es mío.  Por eso dije que el Espíritu recibirá de mí lo que les hará saber.”

 

4. El Espíritu Santo da vida:

  • 2 Corintios 3:6 – “Quien nos hizo ministros competentes de un nuevo pacto, no de la letra, sino del Espíritu.  Porque la letra mata, pero el Espíritu vivifica.”

  • Romanos 8:1-4 – “Los que pertenecen a Cristo Jesús ya no están bajo el juicio de Dios.  Gracias a lo que Cristo Jesús hizo, son libres.  Ahora están controlados por la ley del Espíritu Santo, que les da vida. La ley del Espíritu los libera de la ley del pecado que trae muerte.  La ley escrita se debilitó por el poder del pecado.  Pero Dios hizo lo que la ley escrita no pudo hacer.  Hizo a su Hijo como quienes viven bajo el poder del pecado.  Dios lo envió como ofrenda por el pecado.  Jesús sufrió el juicio de Dios contra nuestro pecado.  Jesús hace por nosotros todo lo que la santa ley exige.  El poder del pecado ya no debería controlar nuestra manera de vivir.  El Espíritu Santo debería controlar nuestra manera de vivir.”
