Why and How does God Forgive Sin?

• Romans 3:23-25

  • ²³ For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, ²⁴ and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, ²⁵ whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.

• Romans 1:18-25

  • ¹⁸ For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. ¹⁹ For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. ²⁰ For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made.  So they are without excuse.  ²¹ For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.  ²² Claiming to be wise, they became fools, ²³ and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.  ²⁴ Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, ²⁵ because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever!  Amen.

• Romans 5:6-11

  • ⁶ For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. ⁷ For one will scarcely die for a righteous person — though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die — ⁸ but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  ⁹ Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.  ¹⁰ For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.  ¹¹ More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

• Isaiah 53:1-12

  • Who has believed what he has heard from us?  And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?  ² For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.  ³ He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faceshe was despised, and we esteemed him not.  ⁴ Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows;yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.  ⁵ But he was pierced for our transgressions;he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. ⁶ All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned — every one — to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.  ⁷ He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.  ⁸ By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people?  ⁹ And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.  ¹⁰ Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes^[i] an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.  ¹¹ Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.  ¹² Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.

• Romanos 3:23-25

  • ²³ Por cuanto todos pecaron y están destituidos de la gloria de Dios, ²⁴ siendo justificados gratuitamente por su gracia, mediante la redención que es en Cristo Jesús, ²⁵ a quien Dios puso como propiciación por medio de la fe en su sangre, para manifestar su justicia, porque en su paciencia pasó por alto los pecados pasados.

• Romanos 1:18-25

  • ¹⁸ Porque la ira de Dios se revela desde el cielo contra toda impiedad e injusticia de los hombres que detienen con injusticia la verdad. ¹⁹ Porque lo que de Dios se conoce les es manifiesto, pues Dios se lo manifestó. ²⁰ Porque sus atributos invisibles, es decir, su eterno poder y naturaleza divina, se han percibido claramente, desde la creación del mundo, en las cosas que han sido hechas. Por lo tanto, no tienen excusa. ²¹ Pues aunque conocieron a Dios, no lo honraron como a Dios ni le dieron gracias, sino que se envanecieron en sus razonamientos, y su necio corazón fue entenebrecido. ²² Profesando ser sabios, se hicieron necios, ²³ y cambiaron la gloria del Dios inmortal por imágenes en forma de hombre corruptible, de aves, de cuadrúpedos y de reptiles. ²⁴ Por lo tanto, Dios los entregó a la impureza, en las concupiscencias de sus corazones, de modo que deshonraron entre sí sus propios cuerpos, ²⁵ porque cambiaron la verdad acerca de Dios por la mentira, honrando y dando culto a las criaturas antes que al Creador, quien es bendito por los siglos. Amén.

• Romanos 5:6-11

  • ⁶ Porque cuando aún éramos débiles, a su tiempo Cristo murió por los impíos. ⁷ Porque difícilmente morirá alguien por un justo, aunque quizás alguno se atreva a morir por uno bueno. ⁸ Pero Dios demuestra su amor por nosotros, en que siendo aún pecadores, Cristo murió por nosotros. ⁹ Así que, ya que hemos sido justificados por su sangre, mucho más seremos salvados por él de la ira de Dios. ¹⁰ Porque si siendo enemigos fuimos reconciliados con Dios por la muerte de su Hijo, mucho más, ahora que estamos reconciliados, seremos salvos por su vida. ¹¹ Más aún, también nos gloriamos en Dios por nuestro Señor Jesucristo, por quien ahora hemos recibido la reconciliación.

• Isaías 53:1-12

  • ¿Quién ha creído a lo que oyó de nosotros? ¿Y a quién se le ha revelado el brazo del Señor? ² Porque creció delante de él como un retoño, como una raíz de tierra seca; no tenía forma ni majestad para que lo miráramos, ni hermosura para que lo deseáramos. ³ Fue despreciado y rechazado por los hombres, varón de dolores[c] y experimentado en quebranto; y como uno de quien se esconde el rostro, fue despreciado, y no lo estimamos. ⁴ Ciertamente él llevó nuestras enfermedades y cargó con nuestros dolores; sin embargo, lo tuvimos por azotado, herido de Dios y abatido. ⁵ Pero él fue herido por nuestras transgresiones, molido por nuestras iniquidades; sobre él recayó el castigo que nos trajo paz, y por sus heridas fuimos sanados. ⁶ Todos nosotros nos hemos descarriado como ovejas; cada cual se ha apartado por su camino; y el Señor cargó sobre él la iniquidad de todos nosotros. ⁷ Fue oprimido y afligido, pero no abrió la boca como cordero llevado al matadero, y como oveja que ante sus trasquiladores guarda silencio, así no abrió la boca. ⁸ Por opresión y juicio fue arrebatado; y en cuanto a su generación, ¿quién pensó que fue cortado de la tierra de los vivientes, herido por la transgresión de mi pueblo? ⁹ Y sepultaron con los impíos, y con un rico en su muerte, aunque no había cometido violencia ni había engaño en su boca. ¹⁰ Sin embargo, fue la voluntad del Señor aplastarlo; lo ha afligido; cuando su alma ofrezca una ofrenda por la culpa, verá descendencia; prolongará sus días; la voluntad del Señor prosperará en su mano. ¹¹ De la angustia de su alma verá y quedará satisfecho; por su conocimiento, el justo, mi siervo, justificará a muchos, y cargará con sus iniquidades. ¹² Por tanto, yo le daré parte con los muchos, y con los fuertes repartirá despojos; por cuanto derramó su vida hasta la muerte, y fue contado con los transgresores, habiendo él llevado el pecado de muchos, y orado por los transgresores.
