Thanksgiving – An Attitude of Gratitude

Thanksgiving Celebration – Historical Context:
1) The first Thanksgiving celebration in America took place in October 1621.
It was a feast for several days at the end of the first harvest season for the Pilgrims in the New World.
It was attended by 53 Pilgrims and 90 Native Americans.
It was a time to celebrate and give thanks to God for his provision.
2) In 1789 President George Washington created the first national day of Thanksgiving.
On October 3, 1789, President George Washington issued his Thanksgiving Proclamation.
His Proclamation designated Thursday, November 26th, 1789 as a “day of public thanks-giving.”
This was the first official Thanksgiving holiday in the United States.
3) In the middle of the Civil War President Abraham Lincoln established Thanksgiving Day as a National Holiday.
On October 3, 1863, President Lincoln issued his Thanksgiving Proclamation.
The Proclamation gives thanks to God for all His blessings and extraordinary provision for the United States.
Also the Proclamation set aside the last Thursday in November as an annual holiday, a day of national Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving to God – Scriptural Context:
1) Old Testament verses
I Chronicles 16:34 – “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.”
Psalm 9:1 – “I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.”
Psalm 95:2-3 – “Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.”
Psalm 100:4 – ”Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.”
Psalm 107:8-9 – “Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind…”
2) New Testament verses
2 Corinthians 9:11-12 – “You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.”
Colossians 4:2 – “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”
Ephesians 5:19-20 – “…Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
I Thessalonians 5:18 – “… Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Dia de Accion de Gracias – Una Actitud de Gratitud

La celebracion de Accion de Gracias – Contexto historico:
1) El primer Dia de Accion de Gracias fue en Octubre de 1621.
Fue un festin por muchos dias al final de la primer cosecha de los Peregrinos en el nuevo mundo.
Formaron parte 53 Peregrinos y 90 nativos americanos.
Era un tiempo de celebracion y dar gracias a Dios por su provision.
2) En 1789 Presidente George Washington creo el primer Dia de Accion de Gracias.
En Octubre 3,1789, Presidente George Washington dio su Proclamacion de Accion de Gracias.
Su Proclamacion designo Jueves, Noviembre 26, 1789 como un “dia de dar gracias publicas.”
Este fue el primer dia oficial de Accion de Gracias en Estados Unidos.
3) En medio de la guerra Civil Presidente Abraham Lincoln estableciio el Dia de Accion de Gracias como un asueto nacional.
En Otubre 3, 1863, Presidente Lincoln su Proclamacion de Accion de Gracias.
La proclamacion da gracias a Dios por sus bendiciones y provision extraordinaria para los Estdos Unidos.
Tambien la Proclamacion puso aparte el ultimo Jueves en Noviembre como un asueto nacional, un dia de Accion de Gracias nacional.
Accion de Gracias – Contexto en Escritura:
1) Versos del Antiguo Testamento
I Cronicas 16:34 – “Den gracias al Señor porque él es bueno; su gran amor perdura para siempre.”
Salmos 9:1 – "Quiero alabarte, Señor, con todo el corazón, y contar todas tus maravillas.”
Salmos 95:2-3 – “Lleguemos ante él con acción de gracias; aclamémoslo con cánticos.”
Salmos 100:4 – ”Entren por sus puertas con acción de gracias; vengan a sus atrios con himnos de alabanza. ¡Denle gracias, alaben su nombre!"
Salmos 107:8-9 – “Que den gracias al Señor por su gran amor, por sus maravillas en favor de los hombres!…”

2 Corintios 9:11-12 – “Ustedes serán enriquecidos en todo sentido para que en toda ocasión puedan ser generosos, y para que por medio de nosotros la generosidad de ustedes resulte en acciones de gracias a Dios.”
