Living To Please God!

I Thessalonians 4:1-12

May 19th, 2019

Verse of the Week

“Finally, Brothers we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living.”

~ I Thessalonians 4:1

1.    We have an unbelievable privilege to orient our lives to PLEASE God.

I Thessalonians 4:1 – “Finally, Brothers we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living.  Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.”

I Thessalonians 4:2 – “For we know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.”

Hebrews 11:5 – “By faith Enoch was taken from this life… For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.”

Ephesians 5:8-10 – “For you were once in darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.  Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.”

Romans 12:1 – “I urge you… to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship.”

2.    God commands us to be PURE and lead HOLY lives.

I Thessalonians 4:3 – “It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality.”

I Thessalonians 4:4-5 – “That each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God…”

I Corinthians 6:18-20 – “Flee from sexual immorality.  All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.  Do you not know that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit…?  You are not your own; you were bought at a price.  Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

Colossians 3:5 – “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature; sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.”

I Thessalonians 4:6-7 – “The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins… For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.”

I Thessalonians 4:7 – “Therefore anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you the Holy Spirit.”

3.  Paul encourages us to GROW in our love for one another.

I Thessalonians 4:9 – “Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.”

I Thessalonians 4:10 – “And in fact, you do love all of God’s family throughout Macedonia.  Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more…”

I Thessalonians 4:11 – “And to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business… so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders…”
