Paul’s Longing For The Church!

I Thessalonians 2:13-20

May 5th, 2019

Verse of the Week

“But brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time… out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.”

~ I Thessalonians 2:17

1.    The Apostle Paul is thankful for the Thessalonians BELIEF in the Word of God.

I Thessalonians 2:13 – “And we also thank God continually because when you received the word of God… you accepted it not as the word of men but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.”

2 Timothy 3:16 – “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

2.    Paul commends the Thessalonians for IMITATING the churches in Judea.

I Thessalonians 2:14 – “For you brothers became imitators of God’s churches in Judea, which are in Christ Jesus…”

I Thessalonians 2:14-15 – “You suffered from your own countrymen the same things those churches suffered from the Jews, who killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets and also drove us out.”

Matthew 5:11 – “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.  Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven…”

3.    Paul condemns those who PERSECUTE the Church of Christ.

I Thessalonians 2:15-16 – “They displease God and are hostile to everyone in their effort to keep us speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved.”

I Thessalonians 2:16 – “…In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit.  The wrath of God has come on them at last.”

4.    Paul has a tremendous LONGING to see the Thessalonians again.

I Thessalonians 2:17 – “But, brothers, when we were torn away from you for a short time (in person not in thought), out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.”

I Thessalonians 2:18 – “For we wanted to come to you… again and again, but Satan stopped us.”

Daniel 10:12-13 – “…An angel came to Daniel in response to his prayer but the angel was delayed for 21 days by a powerful evil spirit.”

I Thessalonians 2:19-20 – “For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes?  Is it not you?  Indeed, you are our glory and joy.”

Daniel 12:3 – “Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.”
